UBD-Seinenmaru Charity Table Tennis Championship 2012

UBD PPC in collaboration with Seinenmaru Event Management will be holding a tournament on:

19th February 2012 (Singles for IPT)

24th and 26th February 2012 (Unisex Team Event - IPT, Invited Schools & Private Teams)

27th February 2012 (Finals)

Dewan Asrama Perempuan UBD.

At least 20% of the profits will go to Tabung Kebajikan Kebangsaan Brunei Darussalam.

Fund-raising games will be held on 24th and 26th February

(Friday and Sunday, 8.00am-5.00pm)

and is open to public to give out to the community whilst having fun!

Entry Fee is $30.00 per team (3-5 people) and $5.00 per person for Single Event

Below is the prospectus.

RIZIQ CUP TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011

Objectives:

a. To assist in the development of Table Tennis in Brunei Darussalam;

b. To make Table Tennis a popular sport amongst the Brunei youth;

c. To make Table Tennis a national pride amongst the sports in Brunei Darussalam.

2. Name of the Championship

RIZIQ Cup Table Tennis Championship 2011

3. Organisation

The Championship is organised by BATTA in cooperation with Riziq Event Management Services and the Department of Youth & Sports, Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports, Brunei Darussalam.

4. Rules

The Competition will be played in according to the ITTF rules.

5. Eligibility of Players

The Competition is open to anyone who holds a Brunei Identity Card.

6. Dates of the Competition

The competition will be held on 12^th, 13^th, 14^th& 16^th December 2011 from 7.00 pm till 10.30 pm.

7. Venue

The competition will be held in Multi Purpose Hall, Berakas Sports Complex.

8. The Events are contested as follows:

7.1 Men Single

7.2 Women Single

7.3 Men Double

9. System of Competition

Initial round will be contested on the round robin basis with two per group proceeding to 2^nd Knock Out Stage. Round Robin will be played best of 3 while the Knock Out Rounds will be played best of 5.

10. Two or more of the man’s top 16 players ranked in the President Cup 2011 shall not form a double pair.

11. Seeding

The referee reserves the right to seed players in accordance to the results of the President Cup Championship 2011.

12. Closing date and Draw

The closing date is on 4^th December 2011 and the Draw will be held at 8pm at the Menglait Sports Complex, Gadong on the same day.

13. Walkover

If a player or one of a double pair or a double pair fails to report for a match within ten (10) minutes from the time of calling according to the Schedule of Play, the player or double pair is deemed to have conceded a walkover to the opponent.

14. Entry Fees

Entry fee for adult players is $30 for single and $50 for double pair; and student Under 21 year of age $10.00 for single and $20 for a double pair. ONLY PAID UP ENTRIES WILL BE ENTERTAINED AT THE DRAW.

15. Late Entries

Late entries will be subjected to the approval of the Referee and if approved will be charge twice the amount of the stated entry fee above (14). The decision of the Referee is final.

16. System of draw

Teams entered will be draw into groups for the round robin stage. The two top teams in each group will be drawn again into the 2^nd Knock Out Stage.

17. Protests

A protest must be submitted in writing not later than thirty minutes (30) after the incident together with a deposit of B$50.00. In the event that the protest is upheld, a refund of deposit will be made. The deposit is forfeited if the protest is found to be groundless. The decision of the Organiser shall be final.

18. The Position of Group

If two or more teams of a particular group score the same number of points (tie), their relative positions shall be determined by the ratio of number matches won divided by the number of matches lost. In the event of a further tie, the final tie break will be based on the ratio of the number of points won divided by the points lost.

19. Competition Schedule

Participants are advised to familiarize the Competition Schedule on the Notice Board in the Menglait Sports Complex or contact the Organisers.

22. Umpiring

Participants within a particular group will umpire the round robin matches on rotation basis. Umpires will only be provided in the Knock Out Stage.

23. Finacial Responsibility

Riziq Event Management Services will be solely responsible in all matters pertaining to finance of the RIZIQ Table Tennis Cup 2011 including paying the agreed technical fees to the technical Committee (nominated by BATTA) for providing the technical services in running the competition.

Universiti Brunei Darussalam Contingent:

Universiti Brunei Darusalam sent 6 table tennis athletes along with 2 other sports, namely Futsal and Basketball. The entire contingent manage to win 3 bronze medals and 1 silver medal. The two bronze medals came from Basketball and Futsal. While the remaining bronze medal was won by the Men's Table Tennis Team of Wee Tzu Min, Md Arif Bin Selamat and Ak Md Azri Bin Pg Hj Metussin. The silver medal and also the highest medal obtain throughout the campaign was won by the Women's Table Tennis Team of Ting Siew Chien, Amelia Dupanggal Koh and Khairunissa Binti Said.

ALERT: Important Notes on ECA Activity

As all new members, you should know that the first 3 ECA activity sessions which was held on the 24th August 2011, 7th September 2011 and the coming 14th September 2011 (next week) are trials.
*After these 3 trials, the real ECA session will start and the attendance from that day onwards will be counted.

The ECA trials and the real ECA has different impacts and activities. Remember you need at least 3 attendance to get the certificate as a member of UBD Ping pong club =) The closing date for Registration will be on the 14th September 2011!

Do come more often! We are hoping to see all the members who came by and those who registered to come and participate in our ECA sessions until the end of semester because we have lots of activities lined up and lots of competitions ahead to prepare for.

Please be reminded that the deadline for BATTA President Cup 2011 registration is 13th Sept 2011 (Tuesday).

“BATTA President Cup Table Tennis Championships 2011”

RULES

1. The name of the Championships is “BATTA President Cup Championships 2011”.

2. Organisation

The Championships is organized by BATTA and in cooperation with the Department of Youth & Sports, Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports, Brunei Darussalam.

3. Rules

The Competition will be played according to the ITTF rules.

4. Eligibility of Players

The competition is open to players who are Brunei citizens, Permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam and Brunei green I/C holders.

5. Dates and venue of the Competition

The competition will be held on 2^nd, 9^th and 16^th October, 2011 at the MENGLAIT SPORTS HALL, from 0900 hours to 2100 hours

6. The Events are as follows:

a. President Cup Men Single

b. President Cup Women Single

c. U18 Boy & Girl Single

7. System of Competition

All events will be contested on the round robin to knock out basis for the best of 5 games.

8. Closing date and draw

The closing date and draw will be held on Sunday the 18^th September 2011 at 3pm at the Menglait Sports Hall.

9. Walkover

A player who fails to report for his / her match within ten minutes from the time of calling according to the Competition Schedule is deemed to have forfeited his / her match to his / her opponent.

10. Protest

A protest must be submitted in writing not later than thirty minutes (30) after the game concerned together with a deposit of B$50.00. In the event that the protest is upheld, a refund of deposit will be made. The deposit is non-refundable otherwise. The decision of the Jury of Appeal (BATTA) shall be final.

11. Tie Break

The order in a group is determined primarily by the numbers of match points gained. In a played match, the winner scores 2 match points and loser scores 1 match point. If two or more members of a group have the same number of points, their order is decided by the results only of the matches between them. If match points do not determine the order, it is decided by the win/loss ratios of games or, if necessary, win/loss ratios of points.

12. Participants are responsible for checking the Competition Schedule on the Notice Board in the Tutong Sports Complex or with the organizers.

13. The prizes will be awarded for President Cup as follows:

a. A Challenge Trophy plus a Gold medal to the winner for Open Man and Woman Single Event.

b. A Silver medal to the winner who is placed second for each event.

c. 2 Bronze medals to the losing semi-finalists for each event.

d. A Gold medal to the BATTA U18 winners for each event.

e. A Silver medal to the BATTA U18 who are placed second for each event.

f. 2 Bronze medals to the BATTA U18 losing semi-finalists for each event.

14. Entry Fee: Members @ $10; Non Members @ $15; Student U21@ $5.00 per event.

15. Late entry after the draw will not be entertained.

16. Official entry form together with entry fee must reach the Secretary General before 3pm on 3^rd July 2011. Entry by e mail should be sent to batta78@gmail.com a day before the closing date. All entry fees must be settled before play commences.

17. Participants are responsible for umpiring and scoring on rotation basis up to the quarter final rounds.

Borneo Games Selection

CONDITIONS to attend selection:

1) Must be UBD Student who is INTERESTED to participate in Borneo Games.

2) Must be COMMITTED - attend all trainings without excuses.

3) Must be able to spare their 10th-14th November for Borneo Games.

NOTE: You will have to sacrifice classes and revisions- BE AWARE that the dates are near to exam.

4) Must be SERIOUS and take this good opportunity to be exposed to table tennis out of Brunei.

5) You must understand, ONCE SELECTED, NO EXCUSES to withdraw.

1) 3 Players will be selected from each gender.

Ø The primary players will be given priority to play most of the mathces.

2) The best 3 players will be selected by the UBDPPC Committee, Advisors and Coach.

Ø Being ranked top 3 in the selection tournament will be ideal but it does not guarantee selection.

Ø Determination, diligence, punctuality, motivation, initiatives as well as skills and techniques will be the main criteria in the selection process.

Amelia sharing her experience of PSR 2011

Amelia with her cheerful mood

Amelia is a sporty girl who is engaging in many different sports. She plays Table Tennis, Badminton, Basketball and she also swims. Being very good in sports, not to surprise that she was selected to be one of IPT representatives to play Table Tennis in Pesta Sukan Remaja 2011, and she brought home 1 gold medal and 1 silver medal.

There goes her thoughts:

My new experiences in PSR 2011, Its fun. the matches are all tight, I'm actually happy to see how the next generations are getting better at ping pong. And since the matches are all tight, it all then lies on how skillful and confident we are in playing to win the game. Unfortunately, I haven’t had enough trainings before the tournament so I didn’t feel as ready. But I know I had it in me to win something for the team. Although I didn’t make it to singles but at least the double is quite satisfying, we grabbed silver, Siew Chien and I. It wasn’t easy and our efforts gained us second place and first place for team. All in all the experience we get from this year’s PSR is definitely something to learn and treasure from.

My skills are not as good which cost me my game. But I definitely achieved something, first I didn’t go sobbing that I lost because I actually put in effort and tried my best to play. Second would be how I wasn’t as afraid as before. I dared to shout, I dared to attack but it still needs a lot of improvements as its not consistent. Overall, I’m still glad I stepped out of my comfort zone even though its only for a while as that’s the first step to success. The thing I love most is how family orientated the players are especially the players from IPT =) Even those who are not playing on the day are willing to come and support their teammates. Not to mention their excitement when clapping for the team and celebrating a friend’s birthday. Also not forgetting how enthusiastic they are during the training for the tournament. We were tortured, frustrated, a little out of hope but we didn’t give up and kept on going, because we believed in our coach, our friends and ourselves. Of course in that hilly ride we had tons of fun too. Achievements, well I don’t think I’ve achieved much as a single person, but as team, we definitely did. I’m looking forward to the next major tournament to prove to myself I can do it!

What does she thinks about Ping Pong compared to the other sports?

Ping pong is a sport that you can play when your only 9 years old until your as old as your 60ty’s 70ty’s. It requires patience, focus, friendliness, confidence, enthusiasm and dedication. Its not as rough as other sports like badminton, football, etc but its definitely faster and its very family oriented as long as you allow them to be.

Besides,we helped each other with a lot of things and still are learn to be a better person and player together. Come be apart of our family and you will know what I mean ;)

Wee Tzu Min sharing his thoughts.

Wee Tzu Min is one of the founder of the current Universiti Brunei Darussalam Ping Pong Club and has been contributing a lot to the club as advisor and coach throughout his 4 years studying in UBD. He is hoping that Table Tennis would one day become a well-known sport in UBD.

Table Tennis is his passion sport. He is very passionate about this sport to a point that the people around him would say that he is "ping-pong minded". If you ever mentioned "UBD Table Tennis" or "UBD Ping Pong", most of the people would have great impression of him.

According to him, he is best satisfied with the recent achievement of all the players in Pesta Sukan Remaja 2011.

This is what he commented after the event:

PSR 2011, is my last coaching job for UBD. The result was very good, all because of the players who are committed and determined. I've been a coach for almost 4 years and in that period i had coached some Chung Hwa Middle School players, some of the Temburong players and some national junior players but i must say my greatest delight was that i had the privilege of coaching all of the UBD and ITB students in the training scheme. I believe this year is the best achievement year for UBD. Congratulations to the players and my staff colleagues.

He volunteered for the coaching position for UBD Ping Pong Club since the club was re-opened. Although he is not an ITTF certified table tennis coach, his effort in sharing his knowledge to other club members is truly appreciated. He is willing to spend his semester break contributing to Table Tennis, not only for UBD Students and also the junior players. He did not ask anything in return but he is hoping to see more people would show interest in this sport and train hard+smart for any upcoming tournaments, and grab the opportunity for the next tournament outside Brunei for more outside exposure.

In short,he is hoping to see more people playing table tennis in Brunei and become competitive outside Brunei.

Tzu Min is currently acting as temporary assistant coach for the national table tennis association. And his next project is to start a training program in his district to encourage junior U12 players to participate in table tennis and lead the way for Temburong Table Tennis in the next Pesta Sukan Remaja.

Experience of Ting Siew Chien in PSR 2011

Ting Siew Chien has been playing Table Tennis since Form 1 and represented her school and district for various tournaments. She continues to play and gained glory for IPT winning 2 golds 1 silver returning from Pesta Sukan Remaja 2011 a month ago. Setting a target of 3 golds in this youth festival is her aim as a stepping stone for the 16th Asean University Games which would be held in Laos.

She shared:

Pesta Sukan Remaja 2011 is the best experience ever in my Table Tennis life. With serious training and high expectation from the officers and coach, I tend to set my target the highest I could achieve- 3 golds. With the achievement of 2 golds and 1 silver, I felt very grateful as well because I've given my best. Besides,Team work, support, determination, commitment and great efforts of all team members were amazing.

Each and every match in PSR were very tense as we are facing strong opponents.The most heartstopping match was my Girl Singles semi-final, in which I played against Goh Jia Yih. Winning the match would bring me to the final stage, losing it would leave me sitting with Bronze Medal. I lost 0-2 badly for the first 2 games. The fact annoyed me. Taking each opportunity to shout those nervousness and fear out from your lungs is just so satisfying. This is the point I know I am playing to my limit, taking charge of each point ahead, not losing any if possible. With such attitude, I managed to win 3 games, winning 3-2 against my opponent.For the last point I scored winning the game, the happiness was so overwhelming that the first thing I did was hugging the coach. It really feels like I won the Olympic Final (but not).

My dream is to represent Brunei to participate in a Table Tennis Event aboard, and I am aiming high for the upcoming 16th Asean University Games. I am hoping all players would have the same aim, and together we train hard and strive for the opportunity to go abroad and gain different experience outside Brunei.

In a game,I have only 3 word/phrase in mind. "Relax, Focus, Never give up!" With consistent training, and strong determination to achieve your goals, you will eventually become a great table tennis player.

Chua Ea Hui plays table tennis since she was in her secondary. She was part of her school's table tennis team. Although she did not win a lot of the tournaments, she appreciated each and every of them for giving her precious memories and experience. In the recent PSR 2011, she achieved a bronze medal with her partner Khairunnisa for Girls double Event. She was having the same thought with Khairunnisa (her double partner) for being very happy having the bronze with a walkover victory. For others, it might be just a lucky day, but for them, it is their victory for having the advantage of winning because of their presence in the battle field,ready to fight.

"Always, ALWAYS come for your match- you don't want people to win against you without playing. Also, you never know when you'll get a walkover win, like I did" - Khairunnisa

Ea Hui shared this:

PSR 2011 is meaningful to me but I appreciate every tournaments that I was able to join. Because the feeling of winning is great, although I lost most of the matches. Well, at least I learnt something new each time in the tournaments.

It would feel better if I won by competing with the opponent themselves. However, we (Nisa and I) were happy when we achieved a bronze in PSR. Just by being present on the spot/in front of the table tennis table, we have won half of the battle.

It's my pleasure to have Tzu Min to coach us. I know nothing on the skill or the right way of playing table tennis before we officially have a coach.. Before Tzu Min coached us, no one told me the right way to play. Only after I met Tzu Min, I found that I know nothing about table tennis although I hold the bat for 3 years. I gained confidence when I was trained the right way to play. Moreover, I don't use "empty spin ball" anymore in the tournament. Now I know how to at least do a basic spin.

I feel thankful for having a coach like Tzu Min. He spent his time to coach us just hoping we can play good in every tournament.

It's not only winning that feels good, but also when your teammates cheer for you and when you cheer for them.

Gold Medals for Girls Team Event for PSR 2011

Chang Seng Yee (the most left in the picture) is an active UBD student who play Table Tennis, and also part of many other activities such as Kendo, Japanese Culture and Debate. With her determination and good time management, she has participated in many events and excelled in them. Pesta Sukan Remaja 2011 was one of the events she participated and she won a pretty gold medal, which is one of her greatest achievements in her table tennis life.

She shared this:

Table tennis is just like any other games or sports. It’s a highly competitive sport. One needs to set their mind, and prepares for competitions. This is not my first time participating in table tennis competition and I can feel that I have improved, although not a lot but at least I did.

This time at the recent competition, PSR, the bar standard of the game has also improved. There are many umpires and volunteers to help to run this competition. The rules of playing the game have also been strengthened and this is advantageous for the players here so that they will not be fouled when they are playing overseas. In addition to that, the most memorable moment was the scene where engaging Malay music being played when players from both teams were entering the field along with the umpire and his assistants. It felt hilarious at first, but it was actually intriguing.

My teammates and I won a gold medal in the Girls team event. My match was a very tight one and the feeling of winning was very gratifying. Also, the medal was the prettiest I have ever received. Although I lost the matches in the girls single, alas, we really put up a very good fight.

To win or to lose, it doesn’t really matter as long as we have gained more experiences. To the future table tennis players out there, train hard and play smart. It is never too late to play table tennis.

Nigel Hong sharing his thoughts for PSR 2011

Nigel Hong is one of the chosen IPT representatives for Pesta Sukan Remaja 2011. He is a determined and commited player who drive from Lumut to Bandar (UBD) for every training sessions which was held Monday - Wednesday afternoon and barely miss any of it for no reason. Although he did not return with medals, he returned with golden priceless experience.

His thoughts for PSR 2011:

This is my first proper tournament. From my experience, team effort is what I am amaze of. Training together with all the players is enjoyable and we learn a lot from the training session.Fear before the game start is an obstacle. Facing the fear is nerve racking. But after the first game, fear is not the opponent the only opponent is the player at the other end of the table. I can see that the coach put a lot of effort to all individual players. Credit is not only to the coach but the other players. The better players help the weaker players as we approach them with all sorts of question or doubt. Eventho, I didn’t get any medals, but I am proud that I have experience from all the games that I played in.

Khairunnisa binti Hj Md Said sharing her experience in PSR 2011

Selections were held to choose the best players to represent IPT contigent and Khairunnisa was one of the chosen one. She begins to play table tennis when she entered UBD and Pesta Sukan Remaja 2011 was one of her first time walking into the field of battle to actually fight for our glory in gaining medals. She achieved 2 Bronze Medals, both in Girls Double and Mixed Double Event to her surprise in her first life-time sport festival.

Sharing with you her thoughts after the event on her experience:

Miraculously, I managed to obtain two bronze medals for IPT during PSR. I was playing the girls’ double and mixed double. The thing about playing doubles is that we should be in sync with our partners. To put it simply, cooperation, understanding and chemistry have got to be there. This is why training together with our partners is essential. Know the style of play of our partners and think of ways to come up with the best combination of being a team. (The coach would help you out here). Unfortunately, we did not have much time for this. Even our individual training had taken up most of the training time, what more to squeeze in playing doubles in the limited amount of time that we had. Nevertheless, I believe, had we practised more together, we could have performed better.

She concluded her thoughts and experiences in a summary:

Determination, motivation and commitment are important ingredients of success.
Success does not necessarily mean you win the match, it is how much you learned from the experience and make an improvement.
Nervous is normal. Hysterical is not. Learn to control your nervousness by whatever means is effective for you.
Never feel intimidated by your opponents no matter how skillful or poker-faced they are. It's possible for them to have a bad day.
Always, ALWAYS come for your match- you don't want people to win against you without playing. Also, you never know when you'll get a walkover win, like I did"
Enjoy the game, and give it your best. No one can blame you for not trying.
Exceed your own expectations, not anyone else's because you know your limits and when you go beyond that, for sure satisfaction and elevation guaranteed.
