BUKAN TEAM FUTSAL emerged the champions after defeating Tungau 2-1 last night in the final of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Table Tennis Championship at the Multipurpose Hall of the Student Affairs Section of UBD at Tungku Link.
Bukan Team Futsal had defeated Sriver EL 3-0 in the semi-finals while Tungau overcame Batman & Robin 2-1 to setup the final match.
Each team, composed of either two or three players, has to two singles match and one doubles match.
Tungau's Raimi Awg Rashid drew first blood by surviving Hj Mohammad Hj Yahya 11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 6-11, 13-11 to give his team the lead.
However, Hj Mohammad teamed up with Abd Hadi Zulfadli Hj Yahya to tie the game with a 11-5, 14-12, 11-5 victory over the duo of Raimi and Md Aiman Ali.
It was do-or-die third game and Abd Hadi Zulfadli was up to the task and disposed of Md Aiman 11-4, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6 to win the tournament.
A total of 13 teams took part in the competition held for the first time in conjunction with the National Day celebration.The teams were split into four groups with the top two teams from each group making it into the quarter-finals.
According to Mokti Hj Muhammad, the President of the UBD Table Tennis Club, the competition was held to scout for potential players to represent the university for the National Sports Festival (PSK).
"The participation was also better than expected and we saw some who have shown potential," said Mokti.
The guest of honour, Mohd Ali Sabri Hj Abang, the Extra Curricular Activities Officer of the Student Affairs Section of UBD, awarded the prizes.
