Wee, Ting rule Table Tennis Friendship Trophy
Monday, March 15, 2010
Wee Tzu Min and Ting Siew Chien smashed Reynold Chin and Lim Mei Jean 2-0 to claim the 2010 Table Tennis Friendship Trophy at the Menglait Sports Complex yesterday.
Organised by the Brunei Amateur Table Tennis Association (Batta), the tournament was held in celebration of the International Women's Day to promote gender equality and empower women in sports.
Yesterday's tournament had each team consisting of either one woman and one man or two women per team.
Open to all ages, 64 competitors ranging from 10 to 60 years-old vied for the trophy and in the end it was the 20 year-old Ting and her partner Wee that triumphed.
Ting's interest in the sport started at the young age of 14. Since then she has competed in tournaments around the country and abroad.
"I've played before in Sibu and other places and though I have not won (much), the experience was worth it," said Ting.
"I think that it is a day (Women's Day) to celebrate the idea that women are now seen as equals to men in the social standings, and also helps to eradicate the prejudice that exists."
Ting's ideas are in line with what tournament director Johnny Chong said he hoped to get out of the competition: "We want to encourage more women to play table tennis. Some countries still hold prejudice against women and we want them to take advantage of Brunei's understanding society. Not only do we want them to strive towards towards excellence but it is also beneficial for their health."
The vice-president of Batta was present to award the respective winners with their prizes.
Second place fell to Reynold Chin and Lim Mei Jean.
The first runners-up were Goh Teck Chin and Kiung Sian Yi while second runners-up were Ti Li Ling and Md Hafidz Hj Hassan.
