Md Hanifah captures men's singles gold

Monday, April 19, 2010
MD HANIFAH HJ BUNGSU beat Zulfadli Hj Abd Rahman 3-0 in the final of the men's singles to capture gold in the 2010 National Table Tennis Championships (NTTC).

Contested at the Multipurpose Hall of the Menglait Sports Complex, the experienced paddler never gave his final opponent space to breathe.

Zulfadli had no reply to Md Hanifah's powerful smashes, allowing the latter to race to a two-set lead.

Md Hanifah breezed through the third set as Zulfadli crumbled, committing schoolboy mistakes that allowed Md Hanifah to clinch the gold by winning 11-2.

"Despite the result, Zulfadli is an experienced player himself. Unfortunately, he is my regular sparring partner and I know how he plays. So I guess I took that to my advantage to control the game," said Md Hanifah.

More than 100 participants from as young as 12 to the ripe old age of 60 took part in the three-day tournament which featured four categories: men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles and women's doubles.

Organised by Brunei Amateur Table Tennis Association (Batta), the objective of the tournament was to scout for talented paddlers for the Southeast Asian Junior Table Tennis Championships scheduled to be held in May in Cambodia and the Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championships in Manila in August.

The national table tennis coach, Wang Gang, was present yesterday and already has certain individuals in mind and the list came as no suprise.

Slated for the junior edition of the tournament are Jason Koh and brother Leonardo Koh, Abdul Wafi, Lydia Hii and Fiona Hii.

Their place have not been cemented though, the coach insisting that there is still work to be done in terms of exposure and gaining experience.

For the senior edition in Manila, Md Hanifah, Zulfadli, Wee Tzu Min and Hj Rosli Hj Yussof are among the contenders.

Juniors Goh Teck Chin and Lei Jian Yu, both of whom have made the semi-finals of the NTTC, will also probably make the cut.

When asked about the tournament in Manila, Md Hanifah replied: "There is still room for improvement. The other countries play faster and are more powerful. But hopefully under coach Wang, our preparations will be enough."

In the men's doubles event, the pairing of Zulfadli and Samuel clinched gold.

For the women's categories, Foo Su Suan claimed a double, beating Lim Mei Jean 3-0 in the singles to grab her first, and in the doubles with partner Audrey Kok, captured gold by beating the pair of Lim and Goh Jia Yih 3-2.

Guest of honour, Lee Pak Kui, the former vice-president of Batta, presented the medals to the winners.
